Diagnosed during Thanksgiving of 2002 after a multitude of tests and examinations, he underwent 4 months of rigorous treatment culminating in 8 weeks of intense radiation therapy to the head, neck and face. At several points treatment became so intense that his flesh began to melt away, causing a number of complications, which left him clinging to life by a mere thread. Just steps away from death, with the support of family and a handful of close friends, he looked within to the Incarnation of the tortured soul himself: Mau Fatt the Rotgut, for strength in this, the darkest of times. Using the inner strength of the Seventh of Nine Incarnations of Nekoterof, he was able to successfully complete his treatment after a month long stay at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in downtown Chicago and was ultimately released on the sixth of May, 2003. This date is considered the rebirth of Etare Neged. With no hope of fully returning to his former self, as a mere shadow, he forged ahead armed with only liquid morphine by his side. Left with radiation scorched flesh that began to mutate upon healing and severely damaged salivary glands, he was forced to learn the most basic of essential skills in order to survive and continue to heal. After a multitude of therapies, he was able to drink water and began to take in food by mouth after months of being fed through a tube to sustain a nutritional balance. Still unable to communicate in anything more then a raspy whisper, he spoke frequently with Mau Fatt as he journeyed within, day in and day out, walking an ever so slight line between fantasy and reality. He would often wake up during the grim hours of the early morning choking on his own blood as his ever-changing throat tried desperately to heal itself after the devastation of the radiation had begun to subside.
